Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drones Aimed at Aramco's Ras Tanura Refinery

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed two drones aimed at the strategic Ras Tanura oil refinery operated by state energy giant Aramco on Monday, a news agency reported, citing a Defense Ministry spokesperson.

"Two drones attempting to attack the Ras Tanura refinery this morning were intercepted and destroyed," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"A limited fire resulted from falling shrapnel during the interception operation, with no civilian casualties."

The spokesperson further acknowledged that debris from the interception landed in proximity to civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The assault is part of a broader wave of retaliatory strikes by Tehran, following a joint US-Israeli military campaign launched Saturday that eliminated several of Iran's most senior officials — among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has unleashed coordinated drone and missile attacks against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military assets, with Saudi Arabia now emerging as one of the latest targets in the rapidly widening regional conflict.

Some media outlets reported that the Ras Tanura refinery was taken offline in the wake of the attack, though those reports have not been officially confirmed.
