Saudi Arabia urges UAE to comply with Yemen’s troop withdrawal request

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia has formally called on the United Arab Emirates to give a constructive response to Yemen’s request for the complete withdrawal of Emirati forces from Yemeni territory within a 24-hour timeframe.

In an official statement, Saudi authorities voiced dissatisfaction over what they described as actions by the UAE that involved pressuring forces aligned with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) to carry out military activities near Saudi Arabia’s southern borders, specifically in the Yemeni governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahara. Riyadh said such moves represent a direct risk to Saudi national security as well as to Yemen’s overall stability.

The statement characterized these actions as “highly dangerous” and said they contradict the principles and objectives of the coalition formed to support legitimacy in Yemen.

"The Kingdom stresses the importance that the brotherly United Arab Emirates accept the Republic of Yemen’s request for all its forces to leave the Republic of Yemen within twenty-four hours and halt any military or financial support to any party within Yemen," the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia further warned that any challenge to its national security constitutes a “red line,” adding that the kingdom “will not hesitate to take all necessary steps and measures to confront and neutralize any such threat.”

According to the statement, Riyadh reaffirmed its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government and reiterated its commitment to Yemen’s security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It also emphasized the need for continued dialogue among Yemeni factions to resolve tensions in the country’s south.

Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition announced it had conducted a “limited” airstrike on two vessels that arrived at Yemen’s Mukalla Port from the UAE, saying the ships were carrying large quantities of weapons and military vehicles intended to support STC forces.

Separately, Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council head announced the termination of the joint defense agreement with the UAE and demanded the withdrawal of all Emirati forces from Yemen within 24 hours.

Tensions have sharply increased following the STC’s seizure of control over Hadramout and Al-Mahra earlier this month after clashes with government troops. The council has repeatedly accused successive Yemeni governments of marginalizing southern regions politically and economically and has renewed calls for separation from the north—claims that Yemeni authorities firmly reject, insisting on maintaining the country’s unity.
